Introduction

Taichung Public Library

Founded on March 1, 2016, Taichung Public Library (TPL) comprises one main library and 46 branches distributed across 28 administrative districts; in addition, Heping District Library is managed by Heping District Office. Guided by forward-thinking vision and professional administration, the library incorporates the core principles of friendliness, convenience, wisdom, aesthetics, professionalism, and collaboration to provide quality reading spaces and services for the public.

Located within Green Museumbrary, the new Main Library officially commenced operations on December 13, 2025. It is centered on the core values of civic participation, collection utilization, and international collaboration. By integrating reading resources across the city, promoting technological innovation, and emphasizing people-oriented services, the library advances the Greater Taichung reading blueprint with the vision of enhancing the city’s competitiveness through reading. As the first public library in Taiwan to adopt an age-specific, building-based layout, its soaring interior spaces create a bright and spacious reading environment, while advanced digital technologies are introduced to deliver innovative and interactive reading experiences. Supported by a big data platform for real-time analysis and operational monitoring, the library serves as a dynamic reading venue for lifelong learning, future exploration, and sustainable intellectual and emotional exchange for all citizens.

Taichung Green Museumbrary

Located on the northern side of Central Park, Taichung Green Museumbrary is a new cultural landmark jointly developed by Taichung City Art Museum and Taichung Public Library. The project was collaboratively designed by the Japanese architectural firm SANAA, founded by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, together with Liu Pei Architects. The building complex consists of eight interconnected volumes of varying heights, with multiple open entrances that invite visitors to wander freely and explore the space. Its exterior integrates a variety of materials, including aluminum expanded metal mesh and glass curtain walls, expressing transparency, fluidity, and openness, while gently drawing natural light and park greenery into the interior. The architecture appears to coexist harmoniously with the city and nature.
